Steep skiing in the Lofoten Islands is the ideal adventure for those who want to combine breathtaking landscapes suspended between sea and mountains with the thrill of skiing steep, spectacular lines overlooking the ocean.
Located at 68°N latitude, between Narvik and Harstad, this bow-shaped archipelago stretches 150–200 km into the Norwegian Sea. Its islands, fjords and rugged peaks form a natural barrier that shelters the Vestfjorden from Arctic winds and powerful ocean swells.
The islands are linked by scenic roads, bridges and underwater tunnels, often skirting the coastline where small harbors allow boats to dock. In some cases, roads don’t reach the smaller islands at all, leaving sea access as the only way in — adding to the feeling of remoteness and exploration.
The main towns are Svolvær and Leknes, while Henningsvær is the most picturesque, built on a rocky promontory in the middle of the sea and famous for its traditional wooden racks used for drying stockfish. Its unique atmosphere and coastal charm make it well worth a visit.
Thanks to its central position within the archipelago, Svolvær is the perfect base for the trip. Here we will stay in a comfortable lodge, ideally located for reaching the most beautiful ski lines of the Lofoten Islands.
Steep skiing in the Lofoten Islands is an experience impossible to forget.
These mountains have a distinctly alpine character, rising sharply from the sea and offering terrain that naturally inspires steep lines and dramatic descents. While several peaks are easily accessible and suitable for moderate ski tours, the steep faces of Higravtind, Geitgallien and Trollsdalen immediately evoke images of narrow couloirs and exposed slopes ideal for expert skiers.
During the week, our objectives usually involve tours with up to 1,200 meters of ascent and slopes ranging from 35° to 45°, typically classic spring couloirs. Because of the coastal setting, it’s common to start the approach with some portagebefore reaching the snow line. Higher up, it is normal to continue with crampons and ice axe to reach a saddle or summit safely.
As always, snow conditions, weather and — above all — avalanche stability will guide the route choices made by the Mountain Guide.
Lofoten Islands: Travel, Accommodation and Logistics
Our base is in Svolvær, reachable in about two hours by car from Narvik–Harstad (Evenes) Airport. We will transfer using a rented car or minivan suitable for both people and ski equipment.
Svolvær, home to about 5,000 residents, offers essential shops, a few pubs and restaurants, and a pleasant harbor area for an evening walk. Norway is known for its high prices and limited traditional cuisine, but specialities like reindeer with cranberries, salmon and herring are well worth tasting. For practicality, we opt for self-managed dinners, organizing breakfast and dinner according to group preferences, while lunch will be eaten in the mountains.
Our Accommodation in Svolvær
We stay in a ski lodge in Hopen, a small seaside promontory about 15 minutes from the center. The lodge offers two twin rooms with linens and towels, a shared bathroom with shower, a fully equipped kitchen with stove and refrigerator, and free WiFi.
Daily Skiing Routine
Our days begin early, as we will be skiing in spring conditions. After breakfast, we aim to leave between 7:00 and 7:30, depending on the objective. The closest tours are only 10–15 minutes away by car, while the more distant ones may require up to 90 minutes of driving.
The ideal is to start skiing around 8:00–8:30, finishing in the early afternoon to allow time to relax. Once back in Svolvær, there is time to freshen up and enjoy an aperitif either at the lodge or in town. Dinner is usually between 19:00 and 20:00, leaving time afterward for a pleasant evening stroll.
The leading Guide is a fully certified UIAGM/IFMGA Montain Guide.

Don’t hesitate to contact us for any other question/information.
We will meet at Evenes airport, according to the flight arrival times. Transfer to our home in Svolvaer (about 2 hours). In the evening, welcome drink, briefing on safety and tour organization.
Challenging ski mountaineering and steep skiing trips. The destinations of the trips will be decided by the Alpine Guide who will take into account the current weather and snow conditions, the abilities of the individuals and the requests of the group. As many trips as possible will be carried out, usually 6 trips, one per day. In the event that safety, for snow-meteorological reasons or any other nature, should not be within the standard parameters, the Alpine Guide will cancel the trip and propose a tourist alternative, if possible. Challenging itineraries will be preferred, but, obviously, the snow conditions will influence our choices, which will in any case have as an essential requirement a management of risk situations appropriate to the snow-meteorological conditions.
In the morning, transfer from Svolvaer to Evenes Airport for all participants, in time for the scheduled flights.
