Description

A Via Ferrata is simply a First World War mountain front line that has been turned into a recreational itinerary with modern equipment. One of the most famous Via Ferrata in the Alps is in the Adamello mountains: Sentiero dei Fiori.

This exceptional itinerary runs along what was once the Italian front line during World War One. A few hundred metres further East, the Austrain-Hungarian soldiers took shelter in trenches, where at present the ski slopes descend towards Passo Tonale. The Via Ferrata winds along the ridge between Passo Casltellaccio and Passo Pisgana. The views of the Adamello, Ortles and Bernina Glaciers are stunning.

It is hard to imagine that young Italian soldiers spent four years at 3000 metres, also during the long and cold Winters that witnessed 20-25 metres of snow and temperatures of -30C°. Tunnels, ladders, suspension bridges and easy climbing sections can be found on this itinerary.
