The mountaineering ascent of Gran Paradiso (4,061 m) is one of the most iconic and rewarding experiences in the Alps — a climb that blends the purity of high altitude with the untouched beauty of Italy’s oldest National Park. As the only 4,000-meter peak entirely within Italian territory, Gran Paradiso offers a truly unique mountaineering adventure, where silence, wide horizons and the crunch of crampons on ancient ice define every step. It is the perfect objective for those attempting their first 4,000-meter summit, yet equally fulfilling for experienced mountaineers seeking an elegant, classic climb without excessive technical difficulty.
From the approach through quiet larch forests to the glacial world revealed at dawn, all the way to the famous final ridge leading to the Madonna at the summit, Gran Paradiso is a complete high-mountain journey — physical, emotional and deeply immersive. Every element — the light, the altitude, the effort, the vast landscape — contributes to an ascent that stays with you forever.
The ascent typically begins in Valsavarenche, the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park, where a scenic trail leads to two historic mountain huts: the Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II (2,735 m), known for its distinctive dome shape, and the Rifugio Chabod (2,750 m), perched above one of the most impressive moraines in the Alps. Both refuges offer warm hospitality, genuine alpine atmosphere and the perfect setting to prepare for the summit day.
The climb to the summit begins before dawn. As the first light colors the mountain, the route ascends the Gran Paradiso Glacier, weaving between wide snowy slopes, impressive seracs and breathtaking views toward the Mont Blanc massif, the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and the peaks of the Dauphiné. The final section — the short but spectacular summit ridge— involves a few easy yet exposed rock steps, safely negotiated under the guidance of a UIAGM Mountain Guide. These last meters lead to the statue of the Madonna of Gran Paradiso, one of the most extraordinary viewpoints in the entire Alpine arc.
The climb offers a perfect balance of physical effort, glacial progression and scenic wonder. Although not technically difficult, the high-altitude environment requires proper preparation, respect for the mountain and a certified guide who ensures safety, correct pacing and adaptation to current conditions. Reaching the 4,061-meter summit of Gran Paradiso means experiencing mountaineering in its purest, most authentic and unforgettable form.

The Federico Chabod Refuge - 2750m. The Federico Chabod Refuge (2750m) is situated at the foot of the north-west face of the Gran Paradiso, at the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park. The refuge is open in the springtime to cater for skiing (until mid-May) and reopens in mid-June until mid-September during the period of traditional climbing and hiking activities. Facilities provide for every comfort. In the summer, the refuge offers hostel services with 85 beds with toilets and shower en suite. The Chabod is the starting point for the standard Gran Paradiso route, offering a spectacular view of the entire massif, and is a stop-off point for route no. 4. It is linked to the Refuge Vittorio Emanuele by a scenic traverse where it is possible to admire and view the whole of the Valsavarenche. It takes two and half hours to arrive at the refuge from the valley floor, with an easy footpath dating back to the king’s hunting days which winds through a larch wood opening out to flowered pastures where animals can often be seen. A rock-climbing facility has been set up in the vicinity of the refuge. In October 2001, the refuge was granted the UNI EN ISO 14001 environmental certificate by Certiquality.
