The Julian Alps are one of the Alpine arc’s most underrated treasures: a wild, authentic and remarkably quiet mountain range, far less visited than the more famous Western Alps yet every bit as fascinating. Here, ski mountaineering means travelling through snow-covered forests, dramatic limestone walls and wide open ridges with sweeping views across Italy, Slovenia and Austria — a true immersion in solitude and unspoiled nature.
With Horizon Adventures, this trip becomes more than a ski tour: it is a complete mountain experience that includes discovering local borderland culture, tasting traditional alpine cuisine and enjoying the warmth of welcoming mountain huts. It strikes the perfect balance between the comfort of the valley and the adventure of spending nights at altitude under a star-filled sky.
This 4-day program is ideal for beginners who want to take their first real steps into ski mountaineering under the guidance of certified UIAGM professionals, combining technical learning with rewarding scenic tours. Two nights in a high-mountain refuge and two nights in a comfortable hotel create the right rhythm: first the ease of the valley, then the authentic atmosphere of the high peaks.
A unique winter escape that allows you to experience the mountains of Friuli from a different angle — far from crowded pistes and close to the true spirit of ski mountaineering.
This ski touring program in the beautiful Julian Alps is specifically designed for beginners who want to take their first steps into ski mountaineering in a safe, enjoyable and supportive environment. Over several days, you will learn the fundamentals of moving on skis in winter terrain, while exploring one of the most scenic and unspoiled mountain ranges in the Eastern Alps.
The ascents chosen for this tour are easy and beginner-friendly, with moderate elevation gain and gentle slopes that allow you to progress at your own pace. Each day offers the opportunity to practice essential techniques — from using skins and managing uphill kick turns to understanding snow conditions and basic safety principles.
Guided by certified UIAGM/IFMGA mountain professionals, this experience is structured as a true introductory ski mountaineering course: educational, rewarding and tailored to those who are new to the discipline. Set against the quiet forests, limestone peaks and wide open views of the Julian Alps, it provides the perfect environment to build confidence, learn new skills and enjoy the magic of winter mountains away from crowded ski resorts.
No prior ski touring experience is required, but you should be in good physical condition and comfortable tackling up to 1,000 meters of ascent.
The leading Guide is a fully certified IFMGA Montain Guide.
