About this activity

Steep Skiing in Lofoten Islands

Steep skiing in Lofoten Islands is the perfect trip for those who want to enjoy breathtaking landscapes between sea and mountains and at the same time ski steep lines with a sea view.

At about 68°N latitude, between Narkiv and Harstad, a bow-shaped peninsula with many islets and fjords, juts out from the ideal coastline of Norway for 150-200 km into the ocean, acting as a barrier and protecting the Vestfjorden from the winds and the impetuous waves of the Arctic Ocean.

They are connected to each other by winding roads with bridges or underwater tunnels, and often overlook the sea, where a small pier allows motorboats to dock. Sometimes, the road does not reach them at all, and access is possible only from the sea.

The most important towns are Svolvaer and Leknes, the most characteristic one Henningsaver, masterfully built on a promontory in the middle of the sea, so much so that it is worth a visit. The harps for drying stockfish are truly characteristic.

Svolvaer is centrally located, so we will base ourselves in a lodge in the area.

Description

Steep skiing in Lofoten Islands is something that won’t be easily forgotten.

The Lofoten mountains have a decidedly alpine character.

Although there are several easily accessible and skiable peaks, the steep sides of Higravtind, the nearby Geitgallien and Trollsdalen easily make one imagine steep lines along gullies and slopes suitable for expert skiers.

Our objectives for the week will be trips up to 1200m, with slopes between 35° and 45°, typically gullies of spring character.

For this reason, it will not be surprising if we have to do a bit of portage (walking with skis on our shoulders) to reach the snow tongues. At the top, then, it will be quite normal not to proceed with skis but to reach our destination, a saddle or a summit, with crampons on our feet and an ice axe in our hands.

Clearly the snow and weather conditions, and above all the stability of the snowpack, will determine the choices of the trips that the Alpine Guide will carry out.

Lofoten Islands: travel, accommdoation and logistics

The base of our activities is the city of Svolvaer, which can be reached in 2 hours by car from Narvik-Harstad airport, known as Evenes. The transfer will be with our car/minivan (which we will rent specifically).

The center of the town (about 5,000 inhabitants) offers essential shops, some pubs and restaurants and a nice walk by the harbor.

Norway, unfortunately, is expensive, and also offers few local culinary specialties: the reindeer fillet with cranberries, salmon and herring, usually offered for breakfast, are excellent, and we can certainly go to the restaurant to taste them.

Therefore we preferred the formula of self-managed dinners. We will organize breakfast and dinner, according to each person’s preferences. For lunch, however, we will always be in the mountains.

The transfers will be with the minivan that we will rent for the occasion. It will be big enough to accommodate everyone, including ski equipment.

Our accommodation in Svolvaer

We will have a Ski Lodge at Hopen, a promontory on the sea 15 minutes from the center of Svolvaer. It has two double rooms with single beds, complete with linens and towels. The bathroom with shower is shared with the other guests.

It has an equipped kitchen, with various dishes and pots, refrigerator and stove. Wifi is available and free.

Our Ski routine

The day starts with the alarm clock a little early because we will be moving in a spring snow condition. Departure after breakfast 7-7.30, depending on the destination.

The closest trips can be reached in 10-15 minutes by car, for the most distant it takes even an hour and a half.

The ideal is to start with skis at 8-8.30 to finish the trip in early afternoon and take some time to relax. Once back in Svolvaer, there will be time to freshen up and enjoy an aperitif, directly at our lodge, or in one of the bars in city center.

Dinner can be from 19.00 to 20.00 in order to leave time for a pleasant evening walk in the center.

Itinerary

We will meet at Evenes airport, according to the flight arrival times. Transfer to our home in Svolvaer (about 2 hours). In the evening, welcome drink, briefing on safety and tour organization.

Challenging ski mountaineering and steep skiing trips. The destinations of the trips will be decided by the Alpine Guide who will take into account the current weather and snow conditions, the abilities of the individuals and the requests of the group. As many trips as possible will be carried out, usually 6 trips, one per day. In the event that safety, for snow-meteorological reasons or any other nature, should not be within the standard parameters, the Alpine Guide will cancel the trip and propose a tourist alternative, if possible. Challenging itineraries will be preferred, but, obviously, the snow conditions will influence our choices, which will in any case have as an essential requirement a management of risk situations appropriate to the snow-meteorological conditions.

In the morning, transfer from Svolvaer to Evenes Airport for all participants, in time for the scheduled flights.
