Where to Ski

  • Toula Glacier
Courmayeur’s most iconic freeride descent begins at Punta Helbronner, reached by the Skyway Monte Bianco. The route crosses spectacular glacial terrain beneath the great peaks of Mont Blanc and, when snow conditions allow, descends towards the Pavillon or even Entrèves. A true high-mountain experience for confident off-piste skiers.
  • Vallée Blanche from Punta Helbronner
One of the world’s most legendary glacier descents, travelling for approximately 18 kilometres through the heart of the Mont Blanc massif before reaching Chamonix. Surrounded by granite spires, crevasses and séracs, this is far more than a ski run—it is an unforgettable journey across an immense frozen landscape.
  • Marbrées Glacier
A wild and less-frequented itinerary starting from the Punta Helbronner area and descending towards Val Ferret. The route combines open glacier skiing, technical passages and a powerful sense of isolation, making it an exceptional choice for experienced freeriders in suitable conditions.
  • Cresta d’Arp to Val Veny
Starting from the highest point of the Courmayeur ski area, this classic freeride itinerary follows wide upper slopes before entering steeper gullies leading towards Val Veny and the Zerotta chairlift. Spectacular views of the southern side of Mont Blanc accompany the entire descent.
  • Arp Vieille
One of Courmayeur’s finest lift-accessed off-piste routes, offering open powder fields, natural features and long descents into Val Veny. Different variations allow the guide to adapt the itinerary to the group’s ability and the snow conditions.
  • Cresta d’Arp to Dolonne
A long and exciting descent on the opposite side of Cresta d’Arp, leading towards Dolonne. Its combination of open slopes, gullies and changing terrain makes it a rewarding adventure for strong off-piste skiers.
  • Vesses Couloirs
A selection of steep and technical couloirs descending from the Arp and Youla sector towards Val Veny. These committing lines are reserved for experienced freeriders with excellent control in narrow and variable terrain.
  • Val Veny Forests
The larch and fir forests above Val Veny offer playful natural terrain and excellent powder skiing, particularly dur

What skiing level is required?

To enjoy off-piste skiing in Courmayeur, participants should be confident skiers with good control on ungroomed terrain and in variable snow conditions. The required level will depend on the chosen itinerary: some routes are suitable for those taking their first steps beyond the pistes, while glacier descents and steeper couloirs demand solid off-piste experience, good fitness and the ability to ski safely for a full day. On glaciated terrain, participants must be comfortable following the guide’s instructions and using the required safety equipment, including a harness, avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe.

Required quipment

Participants must bring complete equipment suitable for off-piste skiing: freeride or touring skis with appropriate boots and poles, or a suitable snowboard setup, together with a helmet, goggles and a comfortable backpack (ABS recommended). Avalanche safety equipment—including a transceiver, shovel and probe—is essential. For glaciated itineraries, a harness is also required, while crampons or other technical equipment may be necessary depending on the route. Warm, breathable layers and waterproof mountain clothing are strongly recommended. A detailed equipment list will be provided before the activity.

Throughout the day, your guide will help refine your technique while sharing essential advice on avalanche awareness, route selection and safe decision-making in the mountains.

Frequently asked questions

Participants need freeride or ski-touring skis, suitable ski boots, poles, a helmet and a comfortable backpack. Essential avalanche safety equipment includes a transceiver, shovel and probe. For glacier itineraries, a harness, sling and locking carabiner are also required. Crampons or additional technical equipment may be necessary depending on the selected route and current conditions. A detailed equipment list will be provided before the activity.

Participants should be confident parallel skiers with good control on red slopes and the ability to manage variable snow conditions. Some itineraries are suitable for those taking their first steps into powder skiing, while glacier descents, steep couloirs and longer backcountry routes require previous off-piste experience, good physical fitness and the ability to ski safely throughout a full day. Your guide will select the most appropriate terrain for your ability and confidence.

Yes. Courmayeur has several specialist rental shops offering freeride skis, ski-touring equipment, helmets, avalanche safety kits and glacier equipment. If you need assistance choosing or reserving the correct setup, please contact us before your activity.

A complete off-piste setup—including freeride skis, boots, helmet and an avalanche safety kit—generally costs approximately €70–€100 per person per day. An avalanche airbag and additional glacier equipment may increase the total cost. Prices depend on the rental shop, equipment category and number of rental days, and should be confirmed when booking.

A standard adult day pass for the Courmayeur ski area generally costs approximately €65–€75 per person. High-altitude itineraries from Punta Helbronner, such as the Toula Glacier or Vallée Blanche, require a suitable Skyway Monte Bianco ticket or combined pass and may cost more. All prices are indicative and should be confirmed before the activity.

No. The price includes only the guide’s professional public liability insurance. Personal accident, medical, mountain rescue and repatriation insurance are not included. We strongly recommend taking out a suitable policy that specifically covers off-piste skiing, ski touring and glacier travel.

The guide will always make the final decision regarding the feasibility and safety of the planned itinerary. In the event of poor visibility, severe weather or high avalanche danger, the programme may be modified or cancelled. Whenever possible, an alternative activity may be proposed, such as off-piste skiing in safer terrain, personalised on-piste coaching or an avalanche-safety session covering snow assessment and the correct use of a transceiver, shovel and probe. Any cancellation remains subject to our booking and cancellation conditions.

The meeting point and starting time will be agreed with your guide according to the selected itinerary, lift access and current snow and weather conditions. Possible meeting areas include Dolonne, Val Veny, Entrèves or the Skyway Monte Bianco departure station.

The guide’s additional expenses are not included in the guiding fee and are shared equally among the participants. These may include lift tickets or the Skyway Monte Bianco ticket, local transport, transfers and, when required by the programme, meals and accommodation. The expected expenses will be communicated before the activity.

Yes, experienced snowboarders can join many of our Courmayeur freeride programmes. A splitboard may be required for itineraries involving uphill sections or longer traverses. Please tell us about your equipment and previous off-piste experience when making your enquiry so that we can select the most suitable itinerary.

Whenever possible, we recommend booking two or more consecutive days. This gives your guide time to understand your skiing, help you improve your technique and progressively introduce you to a wider variety of terrain. It also provides greater flexibility to follow the best available snow and adapt the programme to changing mountain conditions.

The Vallée Blanche normally finishes on the Chamonix side of the Mont Blanc massif. Depending on snow conditions, the descent may end at the Montenvers train or lower in the valley. Return transport to Courmayeur is not included and will be organised according to the itinerary and current conditions.
