About this activity

Skiing the Vallée Blanche: A Legendary Off-Piste Journey in the Heart of Mont Blanc

Skiing the Vallée Blanche is one of the most iconic off-piste experiences in the world — a majestic descent through towering seracs, vast crevasses, and the shimmering glaciers of the Mont Blanc massif. Whether accessed from the Aiguille du Midi on the French side or from Punta Helbronner on the Italian side, the Vallée Blanche offers an unforgettable journey across high alpine terrain, surrounded by some of the most breathtaking mountain scenery on the planet.

Accompanied by one of our IFMGA-certified Mountain Guides, you will glide through a landscape shaped by centuries of ice and wind: the Géant Glacier, the Vallée Noire, the “Salle à Manger,” and the endless snowfields that stretch out beneath Mont Blanc’s summit. The descent is not technically difficult for an intermediate skier, but the environment is serious — which makes the presence of an experienced guide essential for navigating crevasse zones and choosing the safest, most enjoyable line.

We offer guided off-piste skiing in Chamonix Mont Blanc’s top destinations, with the Vallée Blanche as the centerpiece of our winter program. Whether you choose the classic French route or the wilder, more remote Italian variants from Helbronner, each descent delivers a blend of adventure, serenity, and pure alpine magic.

Join us to explore Chamonix, Courmayeur, and the entire Mont Blanc range, and discover why the Vallée Blanche is considered one of Europe’s most extraordinary off-piste descents. We provide private and group guiding for skiers of all levels, from first-time freeriders to experienced backcountry enthusiasts. Our guides will take care of every detail — from safety equipment and route choice to technical tips — allowing you to enjoy one of the most beautiful ski experiences on Earth.

Technical Overview of the Vallée Blanche: Access, Routes, and Logistics

The classic descent of the Vallée Blanche begins in Chamonix, where skiers take the iconic Aiguille du Midi cable carup to 3,842 meters. From the top station, the route starts with the famous Aiguille arête, a narrow exposed ridge that is equipped with fixed ropes early in the season. Once you step onto the glacier, several itineraries open up: the Classic Route, ideal for intermediate off-piste skiers; the Vraie Vallée Blanche, a more direct and crevassed line; the steeper, more committing Petit Envers and Grand Envers variations; and the scenic Vallée Noire, which is typically accessed from the Punta Helbronner side on the Italian border.

For those starting in Italy, the journey begins with the futuristic Skyway Monte Bianco cable car from Courmayeur. From Punta Helbronner (3,466 m), skiers enter the upper basin of the Glacier du Géant, joining the Vallée Blanche from a wilder and less crowded approach. The terrain here is open and glacial, with spectacular views over the Dent du Géant, the Aiguilles de Chamonix, and the full Mont Blanc ridge.

All itineraries converge lower down on the glacier in the area known as the Salle à Manger, before continuing through the Mer de Glace. Depending on snow conditions, the descent can end by skiing all the way down to Montenvers or even Chamonix, or by taking the Montenvers rack railway back into town. With 20 kilometers of skiing and up to 2,800 vertical meters of descent, the Vallée Blanche is a true alpine journey that requires glacier knowledge, route-finding skills, and appropriate safety equipment — making the presence of a certified guide essential.
